White Noise - Child Sleep Consultant

White Noise – What's the hype about?

White noise has so many benefits. In this blog, I cover off its key benefits and the circumstances I regard it as almost an essential household item for sleep.

White noise helps turn on your baby’s innate calming reflex, which is their built-in “on button” for sleep. And as babies get older, white noise becomes a learned sleep cue.

The following are a sample of the cases I recommend white noise is used.

  • Do you have two or more small children that sometimes wake each other up?

  • Do you have twins/siblings that sleep in the same room?

  • Do environmental noises wake  your child (household noises, dog barking, traffic, doorbell etc?)

However, there are some important points about white noise you should know. White noise should be left on for the duration of nap and overnight sleep. It should not be crashing waves, or sounds which stop and start. It should be a continuous drone. These white noise sounds are more like the sounds baby heard in the womb and are more sleep conducive. It’s generally easy to wean your little one from white noise whenever you want. Simply lower the sound gradually, bit by bit, over a week or two until it’s finally off.

Research tells us that white noise machines are safe for babies hearing. Should you blast your white noise machine at max volume and situate it right next to your little one’s head all night long? Of course not! It's important to keep white noise at a safe level and at a safe distance from your baby’s ears.

I have left a link to my favourite white noise machine below;

It's inexpensive, and doubles up as a portable white noise machine.
